Research on the arcing horn with active arc extinguishing function for HVDC grounding electrode line

The grounding electrode line is an important part of the Ultra high voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission system. It acts as channel to conduct unbalanced and current.The arcing horn consists a pair electrodes installed in parallel at both ends insulator string, which provides discharge for fault by air gap protect insulators. In this paper, distributions were studied when was struck lightning. found that gradually decrease along direction from converter station earth electrode. An active arc extinguishing method based on variable resistance proposed. electromagnetic transient simulation model established electrical parameters ±800 kV UHVDC absorbed energy unit needs be least 31.2 49.6 kJ lightning 20 50kA, respectively. According calculation results, with developed tested. test results verifies designed can meet requirements engineering application.
